FLINT WINS SIXTH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, DEFEATS WISCONSIN GLO 72-70 Flint, MI- The Flint Monarchs defeated top-seeded Wisconsin Glo 72-70 to pull off the biggest upset of the Global Women’s Basketball Association (GWBA) playoffs and earned its sixth national title. Wisconsin has dominated the GWBA with two consecutive undefeated seasons; this was their first time losing to Flint.

Sparkle Taylor led the Monarchs with 17 points and three rebounds, Crystal Bradford and Rachel Hollivay each scored 12 points and Brandie (Baker) Cunningham tossed in 10 points. Bradford hit a three-point shot and was fouled in the act of shooting with 7 seconds left to put the Monarchs on top for good. Flint Northwestern graduate Sparkle Taylor was selected Finals MVP for her outstanding play by league founder Sonya Nichols. “This weekend was historic for Flint; we defeated the top two seeded teams to win a national title and three weeks ago from today we won an international title in the Dominican Republic, no other professional basketball team has accomplished this feat,” said Wynn.

Flint finished with a 4-6 record in the Global Women’s Basketball Association and is 8-6 overall. Taylor Wurtz and Julie Wojta scored 22 points to lead the Wisconsin Glo.
